According to Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide

Elves can live a very long life. They have few rules and enjoy dancing and singing. They are also very full of themselves. Be wary of food given to you by an elf or dancing with elves.  Such activity can make a person lose track of time and be trapped with the elves unless rescued. If you hear music coming from the woods, there's a good chance there are elves there. Some say their music can cause madness. To find elves, look for hills surrounded by thorns or close to streams. If there are places there where the ground in sunken in, then that is probably an elven dwelling. Queens generally have greater authority over Kings in regional territories. Male elves seem to be more colorful than the females especially in Autumn. Elves sometimes enchant the grass around their dwelling so that whoever steps on it will turn and go away. If you are good to elves, then they may grant a wish.
